Rebellious

What makes a rebel a rebel? a punk a punk? Why do some people deliberately go against established norms? Just because one person doesn't want to go by the 'social conventions' make him a bad person? What is wrong about body piercing and having pink hair? There is too much pressure to conform to a 'safe' norm. My boss told me how he used to indulge in petty vandalism when he was a student in London, after drinking sessions. He told me how he thought that was bad but still had to conform otherwise he would have 'lost many friends' by standing aside. I started doing some experiments on my own. I started giving my seat in buses to ladies, held door open for women, kept the lift door open when people were rushing, let people ahead of me in queues, always used British spelling for all communication, gave way to people in a hurry. People were aghasted by what I did, they looked at me like I was crazy. Women (the ones involved in the experiment) did not know what to do when I got up in a bus or opened doors for them.

I can understand standing up for older people but women? just because they're women? for all the hullabaloo we make on our blog we can't let go of the cave-man can we? And why do you consider doing reasonable, everyday things that thoughtful people do, an experiment??
